Benny Bing
A painting transformed into a limited-edition object for art, play and community.
Benny Bing collaborated with Canadian wooden puzzle company Puzzle Lab to translate Nkatha, a painting from his BLOOM series, into a limited-edition laser-cut wood puzzle.
The collaboration brought the artwork into another form — allowing the image to be encountered piece by piece, assembled by hand and experienced beyond the traditional canvas.
Produced in British Columbia in an edition of 150, each puzzle was accompanied by a certificate of authenticity signed by the artist.
From painting
to object.
Translating Nkatha into a puzzle changed the way the work could be encountered. Instead of viewing the finished image at once, the collector participates in reconstructing it.
The irregular wooden pieces cut through colour, portraiture and pattern, turning the composition into a tactile experience while preserving the visual language of the original painting.
Limited by design.
Only 150 examples of the Nkatha edition were produced. Each puzzle was conceived as a collectible object and accompanied by a certificate of authenticity signed by Benny Bing.
An edition with a purpose beyond the object.
The collaboration was also created as a fundraiser in support of Toronto's arts community, with a portion of proceeds from each puzzle sold directed to Artscape.
